Fundraising While Serving in Sensitive Areas

At HopeGives, we understand that some missionaries serve in regions where being publicly identified as a missionary could put their safety or the safety of others at risk. To support these individuals while maintaining the integrity of their mission, we’ve developed specific features to help keep their identity secure while still enabling them to raise funds.

Name Masking for Security

Missionaries can choose to mask their name on the website. This means:

  • Your name will not be displayed publicly on your campaign.

  • It will also be hidden at the code level, making it undetectable by search engines.

  • This option is available during the onboarding process when becoming a verified missionary. Simply select that you would like to Mask your name.

Campaign Display and Labeling

Once verified, your campaign will still be labeled as a “missionary” campaign on the HopeGives platform. However, if your name is masked, so you will not be directly associated with the term “missionary” on the public-facing parts of the site.

Note: Once you decide to "Mask" your name on the website, all campaigns you create will show as being created by "Missionary in a Sensitive Region"

Control Over Publicly displayed Content

Just like any Hope Campaign, you will have full control over your campaign’s:

  • Title

  • Description

  • Photos

These elements will be publicly visible, so we encourage you to carefully consider the language and imagery you use to protect your identity and mission context.

FAQ

Is this feature only for international missionaries? No. Anyone serving in a sensitive area, whether internationally or domestically, can use the name-masking option if security is a concern.
Do I have to "Mask" my name? No. This feature is not required. The default is that your name would be displayed.
Do I need to associate with an organization in order to "Mask" my name?  Yes. At this time, the name-masking feature is only available to verified missionaries—meaning those who have associated with an organization on the platform.
Why does HopeGives use the term “missionary” on these campaigns instead of something more neutral? We use the word “missionary” on the platform because it’s a familiar and recognizable term for donors. While some organizations are beginning to adopt alternative language, those terms are often less widely understood by the average donor.
