What Is a Missionary Persona on HopeGives?

A Missionary Persona on HopeGives allows an individual to fundraise on behalf of an organization while ensuring that all funds flow directly to the organization. This setup gives organizations visibility, control, and accountability while empowering missionaries to raise support.

What Is a Missionary Persona
A Missionary Persona is an individual account that is formally associated with an organization on HopeGives.

When someone identifies themselves as a missionary of your organization, they are not raising funds independently. Instead, they are requesting permission to fundraise on your organization’s behalf.

Once approved, that individual can create campaigns as a missionary, but all donations still belong to and flow to the organization.

How the Application Process Works
When an individual selects your organization and claims to be a missionary, an application is sent directly to your organization’s HopeGives account.

The application typically includes

  • Name
  • Email address
  • Additional identifying details when provided

Your organization can review each application and decide whether to accept or decline it.

  • If you accept the application: The individual becomes an approved missionary associated with your organization and can begin creating fundraising campaigns.
  • If you decline the application: The individual will not be able to create missionary campaigns tied to your organization.

You maintain full control over who is authorized to fundraise under your organization’s name.

What Happens After a Missionary Is Approved
Once approved, the missionary can create campaigns on HopeGives. These campaigns are clearly associated with both the missionary and your organization.

When donations are made

  • Donors give to the missionary’s campaign
  • Funds flow directly to the organization
  • The missionary does not receive funds directly

This ensures proper financial oversight and alignment with your internal accounting processes.

Tracking Funds Raised by Each Missionary
Organizations are responsible for tracking how much each missionary raises. HopeGives provides multiple ways to do this, depending on your workflow and systems.

  1. Option One
    Track by campaign name
Each missionary campaign is clearly labeled. You can review campaign names and totals directly in your HopeGives dashboard to see how much each missionary has raised.
  2. Option Two
    Download donor CSV reports
You can download CSV files that include donor and campaign information. These reports allow you to sort and track giving by missionary, campaign, or date for internal reporting.
  3. Option Three
    Use webhooks and metadata
For organizations with technical systems in place, HopeGives supports webhooks. You can use metadata tags to associate donations with specific missionaries and automatically sync that data into your internal tools or databases.

Why This Structure Matters
The Missionary Persona model is designed to balance empowerment and accountability.
It allows missionaries to actively raise support while ensuring

  • Funds remain under organizational control
  • Financial reporting stays centralized
  • Donor trust is maintained
  • Organizations retain approval authority

This approach mirrors how many churches and mission organizations already operate while adding modern fundraising tools and transparency.

If you have questions about missionary approvals, reporting, or technical integrations, the HopeGives team is happy to help.
